Director’s Program Note

“We are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little lives are rounded with a sleep.”

When I began this company, I remember walking the clean slate of Brice Station Vineyards’ hilltop without a single name for an email list and absolutely zero dollars in the bank.

It is an extraordinary feeling to begin this, our fourth season, feeling comfortable, welcomed, and supported by a family which extends beyond the ever-growing company and the Brice Station crew—a family of patrons, businesses, artists, and friends near and far.

Here at Shakespeare on the Vine Theatre Company, we have a foundational mission: honor the integrity of William Shakespeare’s words while presenting something exciting, unique, and original.

At first, that meant being a leader in outdoor Shakespeare in the Sierras. It started by challenging the binary and flipping conventions in Shrew. It manifested by altering the physical landscape you expected in As You Like It. Then it bloomed by capturing your attention in the compelling tragedy of Hamlet.

As we look at this production of The Tempest, we will continue our mission and transport you to a fantastical island!

As Shakespeare on the Vine Theatre Company is not just one person or in one place, wherever I am… this company will continue to push forward as long as it has a family like you.

Thank you for continuing to dream with us by supporting The Tempest.

Sincerely, Tara Kayton

Artistic Director
